Ksham Innovation is a deep-tech assistive technology startup based out of Amravati Maharashtra. We are working to make hearing care accessible to every Indian, enable people with hearing loss to hear better and live independent joyful lives through early intervention and thoughtful rehabilitation.

More than 63 million people in the country live with hearing impairment. Yet more than 90% of this population does not use any form of hearing aid. According to the World Health Organization this gap exists because of stigma around hearing devices, low awareness about hearing health and the high cost of hearing solutions. Most devices available in India are imported and are not designed for Indian users or daily conditions. As a result many people delay hearing care until hearing loss starts affecting their education, work and relationships.

To address this problem we built an end-to-end hearing care ecosystem designed for India. Our  Able Glasses are India’s first non-surgical bone conduction smart aid glasses for people with conductive and mixed hearing loss. They are built into a universal spectacle frame that is comfortable, easy to use and discreet. Able Glasses support Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity, a rechargeable battery and digital programmability. Users can also insert prescription lenses into the frame which makes them useful for people with both hearing and vision loss. What makes Able Glasses unique is their AI-powered one-tap programming. Using deep neural networks the system analyses audiograms, estimates hearing thresholds and automatically sets the right gain for each user with a single tap. This makes hearing rehabilitation faster, more accurate and more personalised.

While developing Able Glasses we realised that many people hesitate to start hearing care due to lack of awareness and access to quality hearing care. To solve this we created the Able Assistant App. Able Assistant is a free mobile app available on the Google Play Store & App store. It supports more than 12 Indian native languages and acts as a users’ personal hearing assistant. Able Assistant allows users to take a quick audiometry screening test at the comfort of their home using just a pair of earphones. This app reduces friction in the entire hearing care journey for elderly users who avoid clinic visits and for younger users with busy schedules. After the test users receive a simplified Audiometry screening report, along with a WHO hearing score. This report helps in early detection of degree hearing loss and gives personalised hearing care recommendations based on their audiogram report to improve their hearing health. If the test shows signs of hearing loss users can find a nearby audiologist from a directory of 6000+ RCI-certified audiologists using the Find Audiologist feature of the app.

The main feature of our app is a LLM powered ‘Able Assistant’ act as a Virtual audiologist trained on reliable audiology data. It provides medically accurate answers to all hearing-related questions of users in simple 12 Indian native languages. By using OpenAI’s large language models the app processes information quickly, reduces response time and lowers hearing care costs by 30 to 40 percent. This makes quality hearing care guidance and assessments more inclusive, accessible and affordable for all.

Along with technology we strongly believe in raising awareness, making early detection and rehabilitation of hearing loss accessible. As part of this effort we conducted a Hearing Health Awareness Bootcamp in rural and semi-urban areas of Amravati and Akola. Through educational films and interactive sessions we reached more than 2,000 students and community members. During the bootcamp over 1,600 individuals took hearing screening tests using the Able Assistant app under the supervision of ENT specialists. This led to early identification of hearing issues in more than 280 people. More than 35 individuals received timely medical treatment after diagnosis. Otoscopy screenings were also conducted with support from medical experts at PDMMC. The impact continued beyond the events as students helped their family members self-screen using the app. The campaign reached over 2,000 people and recognised over 30 students as Hearing Heroes for promoting hearing health. The bootcamp was conducted across 3+ schools, 3+ colleges and in 6+ PWD schools and NGOs while following ethical medical standards.

With empathy-led design and AI-enabled hearing care Ksham Innovation is moving toward its vision of building the world’s most accessible smart hearing care ecosystem. Our vision is to support more than 680 million hearing, speech and visually impaired individuals across the globe. We are proud to share our journey in OpenAI’s ‘AI for Social Good’ documentary and show how Indian engineers are building inclusive solutions for global hearing care.
